TNSTC runs ordinary buses on luxury fares, commuters unhappy

Travelling within Coimbatore city by bus has become a costly affair when compared with other cities and towns in Western Tamil Nadu as the local division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation ( TNSTC) is fast replacing ordinary buses with semi low floor buses with the luxury tag, charging excess fare. In some cases, even ordinary buses are being operated with the express tag, charging luxury fares, giving a sudden jolt to commuters who are already reeling under the steep hike in bus fares.
In most routes, the low floor buses have replaced ordinary buses and their tariff remains 80 to 100 percent higher than that of ordinary buses. Low floor buses with no luxury at all and having too many stops are charging more than double the fares of ordinary buses. Interestingly, the motor vehicle act provides no scope for low floor luxury buses. It has provisions only for ordinary, limited stop and express buses. The minimum charge in low floor buses has been revised from Rs 5 to Rs 7 and the maximum charge has been increased from Rs 17 to Rs 25.
